U.S. Liberia Relations

The Liberian Flag is modeled after the US Flag. Major difference is that the Liberian flag has one star.

Creation and History: Liberia was created by the United States to ease the tension of slavery. Liberia’s relationship with the US formally dates back to 1822. Liberia is the only African Nation that is a creation of the United States. It was an American Navy Ship that took the Freed Slaves from the US to what is now known as Liberia. The American Colonization Society (ACS) that established Liberia was totally American and top ranking US Government Officials including President James Monroe were members of the ACS. Liberia has the distinction of being the longest lasting relationship the United States has on the Continent of Africa.

Names and Places: Liberia’s Capital City, Monrovia, is named after US President James Monroe of Virginia. Liberia’s major medical center, J. F. Kennedy Hospital, is named after US President John F. Kennedy. Liberia’s major trade school, Broker T. Washington Institute, is named after the African-American educator, Broker T. Washington. There are other places and institutions named in honor of US states, cities, and personalities.

Economic and Foreign Ties: United States Companies and affiliated U. S. Companies like Firestone, B. F. Goodridge and LAMCO can credit their survival and high profit in Africa to Liberian labor, land and goodwill. During War World II, Liberia’s Air and Sea Ports were used as transit points for US Service men and women. The Us major spy and communication network in Africa, OMEGA Station and VOA were in Liberia. At the League of Nations and the United Nations, Liberia has sacrificed lucrative economic offers and developmental enticements to support the United States. The United States has been and continues to be the number one donor country to Liberia.
